Lombardy: A proposed law to celebrate its Christian roots

Promoting and protecting places of Lombardy's Christian tradition through a dedicated regional law. This is the goal of the bill presented to the Pirellone by Alessandro Corbetta , leader of the League group in the Lombardy Region and the initiative's first signatory.

The proposal aims to formally recognize the role of Christian roots in building Lombardy's historical, cultural, and landscape identity, initiating a structured process of mapping, promoting, and providing financial support to the symbolic sites of religious tradition throughout the region.

The initiative at the Pirellone

The announcement came to Milano, in the seat of the Regional Council hosted in Pirelli Palace, where Corbetta illustrated the contents of the text.

"Lombardy's Christian roots are the foundation of our identity. With this bill, we clearly affirm that our history, traditions, and symbols cannot be erased, but rather valued and defended," declared the League group leader.

According to the promoter, the measure intends to intervene systematically on a widespread heritage that includes summit crosses, votive shrines, sanctuaries, rural chapels and spiritual paths , present in cities, countryside and mountain areas.

Mapping, funding and cultural initiatives

The bill provides for an intervention on several levels:

• Official regional mapping of places of Christian tradition in Lombardy with possible inclusion of the surveyed sites in a dedicated regional portal , with descriptive sheets, historical references and directions for visits;

• Provision of financial contributions for conservation, maintenance and recovery interventions;

• Support for cultural initiatives, events, and moments of historical and spiritual reflection;

• Creation of an integrated tourism network connecting these locations, including the installation of regional identification plaques to make them recognizable and uniformly promoted.

Implementation should involve municipalities, parishes, and local associations , with the aim of building a structured network capable of combining heritage protection, cultural promotion, and tourism development.

The underlying idea is to transform an often fragmented heritage into a coordinated and recognizable system , capable of generating positive impacts for local economies, particularly in mountainous and rural areas.

The nativity scene and exhibition at Palazzo Pirelli for Christmas 2025

The promotion of Christian symbols, the promoters emphasize, has always been a core aspect of the League's identity. Among the examples cited is the promotion of the nativity scene as a cultural and artistic expression rooted in Lombard tradition.

Precisely in this direction, the Regional Council, through a motion presented by the League, established the nativity scene exhibition at Palazzo Pirelli for Christmas 2025. The initiative included artistic and traditional displays, highlighting the "Presepi di Lombardia" competition and presenting selected works, including nativity scenes made of wood, plaster, and in traditional local styles.

The political debate

In presenting the proposal, Corbetta linked the initiative to a broader cultural and political debate. The group leader referenced incidents that, in his view, marked a progressive marginalization of Christian identity in the public sphere, citing canceled nativity scenes, changes to Christmas carols in schools, and other decisions deemed symbolically significant.

His statements also included a polemical reference to the Democratic Party , accused of giving greater emphasis to certain religious holidays than to other local traditions, such as Lent or the Ambrosian Carnival.

Process in the Commission and prospects

The bill will now face examination by the relevant committees and subsequent passage through the House. It is possible that the text may be subject to amendments during the debate between the majority and the opposition.

At the heart of the discussion will be the balance between valorizing Lombardy's historical and religious heritage and respecting the principles of pluralism, in a region that preserves a multifaceted and widespread cultural legacy.

If approved, the law could represent a significant step in defining a structured regional policy for the protection and promotion of places symbolic of Lombardy's Christian roots.
