Varese: A car hits five young people on State Road 394, killing a 17-year-old girl and seriously injuring four others.

Tragedy in Maccagno with Pino and Veddasca: the group was reaching a beach on Lake Maggiore when they were hit by an out-of-control Fiat Punto.

A Sunday afternoon marked by grief and dismay, June 7th, in the Varese area. A 17-year-old girl lost her life and four other young people were seriously injured after being struck by a car along the Verbano State Road 394, in the Maccagno con Pino and Veddasca area, in the province of Varese.

The dramatic accident occurred shortly before 16pm. Numerous rescue vehicles intervened on site, including three helicopters, several ambulances, medical cars and the Carabinieri of the Luino Company, who are busy reconstructing the exact dynamics of what happened.

The group was walking towards a beach on Lake Maggiore

According to initial reconstructions, the five boys, all residents of the area and aged between 15 and 20, had just gotten out of a car and were walking along the edge of the road in single file to reach a beach on Lake Maggiore.

At that moment, a Fiat Punto driven by a man in his 30s, traveling in the same direction as the youths, lost control as it exited a curve. The vehicle first struck the guardrail along the road and then struck the group of youths.

The impact was devastating. The seventeen-year-old girl died instantly, while her four other friends were thrown to the ground with serious injuries.

The car's run ended against the rock face

After hitting the pedestrians, the car continued its uncontrolled course, crossing the road and crashing into the rock face bordering the road. The car also reportedly knocked over a road sign before coming to a complete stop.

Investigators are conducting all necessary investigations to determine the cause of the accident. They are examining the vehicle's speed, road conditions, and the possible presence of other factors that may have contributed to the loss of control.

Four young people hospitalized in serious conditions

Rescue operations were immediately activated by the Soreu dei Laghi operations center, which ordered the dispatch of a massive emergency response force. Helicopters from the bases of Milano, Como and Sondrio, as well as vehicles from the Red Cross, the Padana Emergenza of Luino and the SOS of Cunardo.

The most seriously injured were transported with critical conditions to the hospitals in Luino, Varese, and the San Gerardo Hospital in Monza.

The driver of the Fiat Punto was also injured, but his condition is not serious and his life is not thought to be in danger.

State Road 394 closed and traffic at a standstill

To allow for rescue operations and technical surveys, State Road 394 was temporarily closed to traffic in the affected section of the road. The closure had serious repercussions on traffic in the upper Lake Maggiore area.

Meanwhile, the Carabinieri of the Luino Company are collecting testimonies and analyzing every useful piece of evidence to accurately reconstruct what happened in a tragedy that has shocked the entire local community.
