Alghero, 48-year-old dies during preparations for spearfishing competition

Tragedy struck Alghero (Sassari) this afternoon. A 48-year-old freediver, Francesco Pagni, originally from Sarzana (La Spezia), died in the waters of the Catalan Gulf while preparing the competition area for the 2026 Italian Spearfishing Qualification Championship with other colleagues.

For reasons currently under investigation, the expert diver did not return to the surface. The Coast Guard responded to the scene and returned the body to the dock. The magistrate on duty ordered an autopsy.

The 2026 Italian Qualifying Championship, organized by the GS Corallo Sub of Alghero, will take place between September 18th and 19th.
