Box office, with 'Spider-Man' and 'The Odyssey' the summer of records continues
The Italian box office continues to surge. Over the weekend of August 6-9, theaters grossed a total of €10.693.616, with 1.287.763 admissions: the eighth-best performance of 2026. Compared to the same weekend last year, the market saw a resounding 308% increase, while compared to the previous weekend, the debut of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," the market fell 43%. Cinetel monitored 2.649 screens (compared to 2.777 last week). "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" remains in the lead, grossing €5.531.247 in its second weekend (€26.997.032 total; €10.281 average print run). The film, which dropped 53% from its debut, has already surpassed "Spider-Man: No Way Home" ($24,9 million) to become the highest-grossing Italian film of the franchise. The next big thing is "Avengers: Endgame," which holds steady at $30,28 million.
Odyssey continues its run. Christopher Nolan's film grossed another €3.970.449 (€44.219.093 overall; €7.606 average print), down just 32% from the previous weekend. It is now the highest-grossing film of 2026, approaching Inside Out 2's €46,5 million. It also surpassed Buen Camino in terms of year-over-year admissions: 5,3 million versus 5,07 million. The rest of the ranking is much further behind. Third place goes to the new horror film "Hokum," with €322.833 (€409.826 in five days; €1.560 average print). 'Minions & Monsters' follows with €194.195 (€7.645.527; €727 average copy) and 'Toy Story 5' with €70.873 (€9.192.837; €466 average copy). Also noteworthy are the performances of some titles that had been on the air for some time: 'Michael' grossed €37.148 and reached a total of €25,17 million, while 'The Devil Wears Prada 2', with another €31.605, climbed to €32,14 million, now just a few tens of thousands of euros behind Barbie. The most significant figure, however, remains the overall figure. In the first nine days of August, the Italian box office has already generated €30,46 million, 349% more than the same period in 2025 and 253% more than in 2024.
Since the beginning of the year, box office receipts have reached $396,54 million, a 41% increase over 2025, while admissions have reached 52 million (+32%). These numbers confirm the exceptional nature of a summer built primarily on the simultaneous release of two event films capable of jointly supporting the market, rather than cannibalizing each other. The same phenomenon is even more evident in the United States. 'Spider-Man: Brand New Day' dominated its second weekend with $145 million ($655,1 million total; $32.315 per theater average), the third-best second weekend in American history. Worldwide, the film has already grossed approximately $1,67 billion. Odissea follows with $31,5 million ($461,2 million domestically; $8.742 average), for approximately $1,1 billion worldwide. Overall, the North American weekend market is worth approximately $203 million, more than 50% more than the same weekend in 2025, making it the first full August weekend above $200 million in a decade.
