At the G8 summit in Genoa, former Carabiniere Placanica speaks: "A part of me has died; that day changed my destiny."

“It's as if a part of me had died. My destiny changed that day.” Mario Placanica, speaking in an interview with Tg1, recalls July 20, 2001. Placanica was 18 years old at the time and a Carabiniere serving in Genoa, when protests against the G8 summit erupted in Piazza Alimonda and a military vehicle was surrounded by demonstrators. Stones and heavy objects were thrown at the vehicle, and Placanica fired the bullet that struck 23-year-old Carlo Giuliani, killing him. “They attacked us,” he recalls, “and they threw everything at us. Our lives were in danger. I tried to shoot as high as possible. There was no one in front of me,” and “I was hallucinating from the tear gas. My life has been marked by pain.”  

Years ago, Placanica wanted to meet Carlo Giuliani's father. She told him, "It wasn't my fault; I was doing my duty," adding, "This G8 was something bigger than us."
