Infantino took a dig at Italy: "We could get to 208 teams to see if they qualify."

"Let's see how this World Cup with 48 national teams unfolds. It's clear that it's a very large event. We've already discussed 64 teams, greater involvement from around the world. The question has been posed to the FIFA Council, but let's use this first Cup with 48 teams to understand." FIFA President Gianni Infantino said this to Brazilian channel Cazè TV and reported by South American websites, during the opening match of the 2026 World Cup between Mexico and South Africa, discussing the possibility of further expanding the tournament from the current 48 teams to 64 participants.  

Then came the ironic dig at Italy. "Maybe Italy can qualify with 64 teams... we could field 208 to see if they qualify," added the world football leader.
