Meloni: "If you commit a crime, you can't claim compensation for the damages you've suffered. It's not fair."

"You attack me. I defend myself. And I should compensate you? It's not fair. With the latest Security Bill, we're introducing a rule of pure common sense: anyone who suffers harm while committing a crime cannot claim compensation, nor can their family members. Anyone who breaks the law cannot expect compensation from those who defended themselves. The State is on the side of decent people. Not criminals." Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni wrote this on social media, posting a card with her photo and the caption, "Security Bill – Enough paradoxes! Anyone who commits a crime cannot claim compensation for the harm suffered while committing a crime." 

The abolition of compensation for damages for those convicted of excessive self-defense, a measure inspired by the case of jeweler Mario Roggero, who shot and killed his robbers on April 28, 2021, and was subsequently sued for €3,3 million by their families, is among the new measures approved by the Council of Ministers. 

In particular, Article 7 excludes compensation for damages if the act occurs during the commission by the injured party of one of the crimes referred to in Articles 609-bis (sexual violence), 609-quater (sexual acts with a minor), 609-octies (gang sexual violence), 624-bis (burglary, snatching theft, and theft by dexterity in special cases), 628 (robbery), 630 (kidnapping for the purpose of extortion) of the Criminal Code.
