Norway: Fire out of control, over 100 homes destroyed

More than 100 homes have been destroyed by fires that raged in the Krokstadelva area of ​​Drammen municipality, 40 kilometers from Oslo, Norway. Police Chief Frode Presthus announced the news at a press conference, adding that the fire is out of control. Several hundred people have been evacuated, and no one has been injured, according to broadcaster NRK.

Six firefighting helicopters were deployed to help put out the fire. 

"This is a terrible accident that affects all of Drammen," Mayor Kjell Arne Hermansen told NRK. The municipality has established a crisis management team and is setting up an evacuation center. "All our resources, from the municipality and emergency services, are currently committed to helping people in the area," Hermansen said. Two collection points have been set up for evacuees. 

"We are working to save the homes," continued Police Chief Presthus. The fire spread to an area of ​​terraced houses, and one of the firefighters who responded suffered minor injuries, Nrk explained. Residents have been asked to avoid the area and report any missing persons or those they cannot contact. 

"Leave the area. Close doors, windows, and ventilation ducts; turn off ventilation if possible," reads the emergency message issued by the police. "There is a risk of explosion and toxic fume emissions," the document continues.
