Record-breaking surgery in Catania: 98-year-old Giuseppe was put back on his feet with a double hip replacement in a single procedure.
Giuseppe, 98, originally from Randazzo in the province of Catania, suffered from severe bilateral hip arthritis, causing him such severe pain that he was unable to walk. Now, thanks to the implantation of two hip prostheses in a single surgery, he is back on his feet, standing just hours after the operation. The surgery was performed at the Humanitas Clinical Institute in Catania by Giuseppe Mazziotta, head of Orthopedics at the Sicilian hospital, with the subsequent collaboration of a multidisciplinary team that allowed the elderly man to make a full recovery. "This is one of the very rare cases described internationally in a person of this age," Humanitas reports.
It was Giuseppe himself who requested surgery on both joints, the doctors explain. After clinical and anesthesiological assessments, given his excellent general condition despite his age, the team performed bilateral hip replacements during the same surgical session. After completing the procedure on the first hip, having verified the stability of the parameters, the doctors also proceeded with the second, after consulting with the patient, who remained alert during spinal anesthesia combined with sedation. The operation, which lasted less than two hours, was performed using a minimally invasive posterolateral approach and with cemented femoral prostheses to limit blood loss, according to a statement. Giuseppe began mobilization on the day of surgery and, after several weeks of rehabilitation, left the hospital on his own two feet.
