Roland Garros, Berrettini in tears is forced to retire. Arnaldi embraces him, and the crowd applauds.

There's no peace for Matteo Berrettini. The Italian is forced to withdraw from the Roland Garros quarterfinals against Matteo Arnaldi today, Wednesday, June 3. During the second set, the Italian suffered a left leg injury and slowed his pace, limiting himself—for several minutes—to limiting the damage. Then, after the third game of the second set, the Italian called a medical timeout and the intervention of a physiotherapist.

Back on the court, Berrettini initially gave it a try, but then struggled again with a muscle strain in his left thigh. At that point, even his own corner—starting with coaches Alessandro Bega and Thomas Enqvist—advised him to throw in the towel.

Matteo thought about it and stopped, trying to gather his strength to try again. But to no avail. In the end, he was forced to retire. In the semifinals, against Flavio Cobolli, Matteo Arnaldi would go on to face him. In a sporting and brotherly way, he asked for the crowd to applaud Berrettini.
