Student protests escalate in France: a fire breaks out at a school in Metz, and a 15-year-old is arrested for assault.
France continues to be in flames over student protests that erupted in recent days, resulting in over 600 arrests and more than 40 school principals injured. "The hypothesis of arson is being considered" for the fire that broke out at the François-Rabelais middle school in the French city of Metz shortly before 22:30 PM yesterday. The flames, Bfmtv reports, destroyed at least two vehicles and the school's external canopy. The fire was extinguished shortly before midnight thanks to the intervention of firefighters. The Metz prosecutor's office has opened an investigation into the crime of destruction of property by dangerous means.
The prosecutor "neither confirms nor denies any possible connection" between this fire and the ongoing protest movement in France, where numerous schools have been damaged during the demonstrations by high school students, the broadcaster adds. "I hope for a very decisive response from the justice system and the police investigation to identify those responsible," said the city's mayor, François Grosdidier.
Meanwhile, in Marseille, a fifteen-year-old boy suspected of spraying a flammable spray in the face of a passerby on the sidelines of student demonstrations has been arrested. The prosecutor's office announced the incident today. The attack was captured on video that went viral on social media: the woman appears to stand in the way while a group attempts to destroy a bus shelter. A masked person then fires a spray can at the woman and, using a lighter, blows a jet of flame toward the victim's face.
