Wimbledon: Sinner too strong, Djokovic bows: "Jannik is superior."
“Jannik was superior.” Novak Djokovic bows after his clear defeat to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon semifinals. The 39-year-old Serbian was defeated in three sets by the Italian, who will face German Alex Zverev in the final. “I don't think I could have done anything else; it was a good lesson. I was half a step slower on every shot; Jannik was at least a level ahead of me. I wasn't reactive enough, I didn't have enough balance: there was little I could do. I felt good physically, he was dominant on the court: he was simply better, and that's all there is to it. Me, the best returner in the world? I was…” Djokovic said at a press conference.
The Serbian oscillates between the satisfaction of an "eternal" competitiveness and the disappointment of defeat. "I always give it my all. Last year I reached four semifinals in Grand Slam tournaments. This year, so far, I've reached one final and one semifinal. For 99% of players, that would be an excellent result at Grand Slam level, but for me, it's not good enough. I'm lucky and cursed at the same time; I'm used to top-level results. In a way, I'm coming to terms with myself: I say to myself, 'It's incredible that you're still capable of playing at such a high level and pushing young players to their limits,'" he says.
“At the same time, I still have very high expectations. I enjoy the competition, I enjoy the thrill, and to experience it, I put a lot of pressure on myself physically. I'm happy that my body held up pretty well at this tournament,” he admits. “When I'm feeling good, I feel like I'm still capable of playing like a top-5 player, I'm still capable of competing at the highest level. I try to take one day at a time; no one forces me to play, and I don't feel any particular pressure. I play because I want to and because I can still do it at a high level,” he explains. So, will we see each other at Wimbledon in 2027? “Let's see, I'd like to play here for another year.”
