At least eleven people have died in the devastating forest fire that has struck the province of Almería, in Andalusia, southern Spain. The blaze, which broke out in the Los Gallardos area and quickly spread to the neighboring municipality of Bédar, has caused one of the worst fire-related tragedies ever recorded in the region. Authorities note that the death toll could rise further, as firefighting and search operations continue under particularly difficult conditions. Andalusia's Minister of the Presidency, Health, and Emergencies, Antonio Sanz, called the event "an unprecedented tragedy," describing it as the most severe fire ever recorded in the autonomous community.

Victims trapped during escape and seriously injured

According to the reconstruction provided by Andalusian authorities, most of the victims were found dead inside cars trapped by flames along a secondary road near Bédar. Antonio Sanz explained that two distinct scenarios of the tragedy have been identified: in the first, four British citizens died inside a vehicle, while in the second, seven other people attempted to escape the thick smoke by abandoning the evacuation routes indicated by rescuers. The number of injured has risen to eight, four of whom suffered serious burns and were hospitalized. Two people survived only after jumping down an embankment to escape the advancing fire.

A thousand evacuees and a massive rescue effort

The emergency forced authorities to completely evacuate the municipality of Bédar and the hamlets of Almocaizar, El Chocolate, and Los Collados, while approximately a thousand people were displaced from their homes. Currently, 122 displaced persons are being housed in the Lubrín municipal theater and the Garrucha sports arena, facilities set up to accommodate evacuees. The fire has also made the main road in the area impassable, forcing emergency responders to divert transport to alternative routes. More than 150 firefighters are involved in the extinguishing operations, supported by numerous aircraft, fire engines, and members of the Spanish Army's Military Emergencies Unit (UME), mobilized to battle a fire that continues to cause serious concern.

Possible causes of the fire and the context of the heat wave

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Witnesses reported that the flames may have been started by a power line falling on particularly dry vegetation, allowing the fire to spread extremely rapidly. Authorities, however, have not yet officially confirmed this investigative hypothesis. The blaze broke out as Spain is experiencing a new and intense heat wave, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) and orange weather alerts in several areas of Andalusia. In recent years, the country has experienced increasingly scorching summers and exceptionally large fires: last year alone, nearly 400.000 hectares of land were destroyed, the highest figure ever recorded by the European Forest Fire Information System.

The institutions' condolences and the appeal for caution

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his "enormous sadness and desolation" on X over the tragedy that has struck the province of Almería, extending his condolences to the families of the victims, his best wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured, and his solidarity with the residents affected. The Prime Minister confirmed the mobilization of resources from the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Civil Protection, security forces, and the Military Emergencies Unit to support the firefighting operations, urging the population to exercise extreme caution and to follow only the instructions of emergency responders during evacuations. The President of the Regional Government of Andalusia, Juanma Moreno, also expressed his sorrow for what he called a tragedy that has profoundly affected the entire region, expressing his closeness to the families of the victims and the municipalities devastated by the fire.
