Grottaglie: Fugitive Robber Arrested in Luxembourg and Brought Back to Italy

In March 2023, a tobacco shop in the heart of Grottaglie was the scene of a robbery committed by a man disguised as a balaclava. Despite immediate identification by officers from the local police station, the alleged robber managed to evade capture and disappear, initially settling in several Central European countries.

International investigations and cooperation between law enforcement agencies

Investigators from the Grottaglie Police Station, coordinated by the Taranto Public Prosecutor's Office, have launched a comprehensive investigation aimed at tracking down the man, with the support of the Central Directorate of Criminal Police and the Service for International Police Cooperation – SIRe.NE Division. Thanks to this international network, the 58-year-old was located in Luxembourg , where he had established his residence during his period on the run.

European Arrest Warrant and Return to Italy

In light of the evidence gathered, the Italian judicial authorities issued a European arrest warrant , which was executed with the collaboration of the Luxembourg authorities. The man, who arrived at Fiumicino Airport in the custody of the foreign police, was taken into custody by officers from the Border Office and taken to the "Regina Coeli" prison in Rome.

Criminal record and fugitive status

In addition to the Grottaglie robbery, the 58-year-old will serve prison sentences for crimes committed in Belgium during his time as a fugitive. The operation confirms the ability of Italian law enforcement to collaborate with foreign authorities to combat transnational crime.
