Brindisi: A 30-year-old man has been arrested for shooting after a traffic dispute and is charged with attempted extortion and assault.
On April 27, 2026, Carabinieri officers from the Operations and Mobile Unit of the Brindisi Company executed a pre-trial detention order against a 30-year-old man from Brindisi, charged with attempted aggravated extortion, illegal possession of a firearm, and attempted bodily harm. This operation is part of a thorough investigation conducted by the Brindisi Public Prosecutor's Office, which led to the reconstruction of a serious episode of violence stemming from a minor traffic accident.
The road accident and the violent reaction
It all began on April 6th, when the suspect, who was driving on a revoked license, was involved in a car accident with a car carrying two young people. Despite no injuries, the 30-year-old reacted with disproportionate violence, demanding immediate compensation for damages or the filing of a CAI (Friendly Incident Report) form with false information to avoid checks.
The escalation of violence
The following day, during a meeting to seek an amicable solution, held near a church, the man's extortionist demands escalated. When the victims refused to comply, the suspect threatened the two people before leaving to retrieve a firearm. Shortly thereafter, he pulled up alongside the victims' car and fired two shots, hitting the driver's door and the front license plate, before attempting to block the road.
The investigation and the evidence against him
The investigation, conducted by the Brindisi Carabinieri Operations Unit, allowed for a precise reconstruction of the attack. The Carabinieri analyzed the video surveillance systems of public and private businesses in the area, confirming the helmet and the vehicle used by the attacker. Furthermore, technical examinations of the vehicle struck allowed them to reconstruct the bullet trajectory, with one of the bullets found lodged in the driver's side door. Finally, the victims clearly identified the perpetrator during the photo identification process.
The precautionary measure and the arrest
The Brindisi investigating judge emphasized the dangerousness of the suspect, who was already subject to an alternative probationary measure involving social services and has numerous prior convictions for property and weapons crimes. The use of a firearm in broad daylight and in a crowded area was deemed an act of unprecedented violence, necessitating the precautionary measure to prevent a repeat of similar behavior.
The man was arrested and, after the usual formalities, was transferred to the Brindisi prison, where he will remain at the disposal of the judicial authorities pending further developments.
