Ostuni: Two men reported for using parakeets to beg tourists.

As part of its efforts to prevent and suppress illegal activities, the Ostuni State Police Station put an end to an illegal begging operation involving animals in the historic center of the "white city." The operation, which took place on Tuesday, July 8, was coordinated with the local police and resulted in the filing of charges against two Italian men, aged 50 and 65, originally from Campania.

Report and seizure of the parakeets

The two suspects were busy entertaining passersby with two small budgerigars, which they displayed on a stage constructed from a cardboard box. Passersby were asked for money, while the animals were transported in an inadequate cage and kept in a plastic bag, a condition incompatible with their nature. The police seized the cage, transferred the birds to a suitable container, and provided them with food and water, pending the arrival of the local health authority veterinarian, who verified the parrots' health.

Administrative disputes and animal welfare

The operation revealed violations of regional animal welfare regulations. The two men were charged with keeping and transporting animals in conditions that caused suffering and were incompatible with their nature, aggravated by exposure to high summer temperatures. The cooperation of the residents, who had reported the presence of the parakeets, proved crucial to the operation's success.
