Seized by local police after months of ignoring prescriptions. The dog was clearly in distress; its owner was reported to the judicial authorities.
An Alaskan Malamute was found with a metal collar completely embedded in its neck, requiring immediate intervention by authorities and emergency surgery. The dog involved is Rocco, a dog already known to authorities and subject to a specific mayoral order following previous episodes of aggression.
The animal's administrative seizure was carried out on May 26 by personnel from the Urban Security team of the Trento Local Police, with the support of the National League for the Defense of the Dog, the body managing the Trento Kennel, and the Asuit Veterinary Service.
Prescriptions ignored by the owner
According to the municipal administration, the measure was necessary due to the owner's repeated failure to comply with the instructions issued by the competent authorities. The provisions were issued to ensure both public safety and the animal's well-being, but were reportedly not complied with despite numerous warnings received over time.
During the inspection, the operators encountered a particularly serious situation: the metal collar worn by Rocco had penetrated the tissues of his neck, causing a deep skin lesion and causing the animal obvious suffering.
Complex recovery due to pain and aggression
The recovery operation proved particularly delicate. The large dog was showing signs of aggression, attributable to the severe pain caused by the wound. Its condition made it impossible to apply a leash without further aggravating the injuries.
For this reason, the veterinarians of the National League for the Defense of the Dog had to sedate the animal, so as to allow for its recovery and subsequent transport in safe conditions.
Surgery at the Trento Kennel
Once transferred to the Trento Animal Shelter clinic, Rocco immediately underwent surgery to remove the collar links that had penetrated his neck. The operation eliminated the root cause of the animal's suffering and began his recovery process.
Report to the Prosecutor's Office
The situation encountered by the operators was deemed particularly serious from a regulatory perspective. The municipal administration highlighted that the case constitutes a violation of the custody and care obligations required by current legislation, as well as a failure to comply with the instructions issued by the municipal authorities.
For these reasons, a report has been sent to the judicial authorities to ascertain any criminal liability on the part of the owner.
The Municipality's appeal: owning a dog means taking on specific responsibilities
Through this episode, the Municipality of Trento draws attention to the importance of proper pet management. Adopting a dog as a family member entails specific obligations of care, attention, and understanding of the animal's ethological and behavioral needs.
The Administration also reaffirmed its commitment to protecting animal welfare, pursued through collaboration between institutions, veterinary services, police forces, and specialized associations in the area.
The behavioral guidelines and regulations issued by the authorities, the Municipality emphasizes, should not be considered punitive measures, but rather useful tools to improve animal management, prevent risky situations, and promote responsible coexistence between humans and dogs.
